The town of Bentong, Pahang, witnessed a recent tragic case of an elderly man who died alone in his own home, only for the public to learn the truth hours after his demise.
According to China Press, the victim was a man in his eighties named He (transliteration), who was known among residents as the “Mute Uncle” due to him being deaf and mute since childhood.

The Chinese daily also reported that the victim had married a woman who was also deaf and mute like him and had children together.
However, his children left to work elsewhere when they got older, leaving the victim to live all by himself at the upper floor of a shoplot located at Jalan Chui Yin.

One of the shoplot’s tenant suspected something was amiss when he noticed the victim didn’t appear for several days in a row and detected a foul smell wafting from his unit.
Upon unlocking the door leading to the victim’s home, the tenant stumbled upon the latter’s decomposing body in the hall, which suggested he had passed away several hours before.
Police were called to the scene and preliminary investigations found no evidence of criminal elements being involved, leading to the conclusion that the victim had died of natural causes.
Neighbors told China Press that the victim was a quiet individual who rarely interacted with others and only occasionally nodded as a form of greeting.

They also said he spent much of his later years in solitude as his children were too busy with work to accompany him regularly.
His death is another case of elderly folks dying alone in their own homes in Bentong, which has seen a spate of similar cases in recent years.
If you have elderly parents who are currently living alone, do remember to take some time off to visit them!
