A netizen believed to be from China recently took to social media to praise Malaysian moviegoers, saying he was impressed by the cinema etiquette here.
In his post, he shared that throughout the entire movie, he did not encounter anyone recording the screen, nor were there children making noise.

No one was answering phone
He also noted that no one was answering phone calls, kicking seats, or talking loudly during the screening.
I watched a movie and didn’t see anyone screen-recording. No children were making noise, no one was on the phone, no one was kicking seats or talking loudly. The quality of Malaysian Chinese in this aspect is really something,” he wrote.

His comments quickly caught the attention of Malaysian netizens.
“That’s just our daily life”
Many Malaysians responded by saying that what he described was simply an ordinary cinema experience in the country.
Malaysian influencer Lucas jokingly commented, “So our daily routine is actually this impressive? ”

Others echoed similar sentiments, saying that most Malaysian movie audiences generally follow cinema rules and basic courtesy without much fuss.
Some even expressed surprise that such behaviour was considered exceptional elsewhere.
“Isn’t this how it’s supposed to be? 🤣”

“Haha, I feel the same. I went in quite early when I watched it. But the audience was quite diverse, with Chinese, Indians and Malays of different races and nationalities watching together. The Chinese friends were a bit loud before the show started, but once it began, the whole hall was really quiet. No phone sounds, just the movie. Maybe I don’t go to the cinema that often and I’m a bit ‘suagu’ (outdated/naive), but I didn’t expect that a Chinese-language film like this would attract so many friends from other races to watch together.”

Not everyone agrees
However, not all Malaysians agreed that cinema etiquette here is perfect.
Several users shared their own unpleasant experiences at local cinemas, saying they had encountered noisy children, people scrolling on their phones with bright screens, and even moviegoers answering calls mid-show.
“You were just lucky. In recent years when I go to the cinema, I only choose morning or noon slots when there are fewer people. I also pick cinemas in less crowded malls because I don’t want to run into a bunch of idiots 😪”

“I’ve encountered people kicking seats and talking non-stop.”
