Not long ago, reports emerged of a group of foreign beggars with disabilities begging in Johor Bahru and earning up to RM10,000 monthly. Now, a similar incident has come to light.
Foreign beggars in Malaysia are reportedly making substantial incomes, with some earning as much as RM12,000 per month.
In a recent operation, dubbed Ops Kutip and Ops Jaja, the Johor State Immigration Department (JIM) detained four foreign nationals at a night market in Taman Nusa Perintis, Gelang Patah.
The detainees include two Thai men, one Cambodian man, and one Pakistani man, all aged between 22 and 56.
According to Kosmo!, the recent crackdown targets foreign beggars and unauthorised charity collectors following multiple public complaints about their presence at the night market.
Sympathy-Based Tactics
The beggars, some of whom have physical disabilities, are reported to have been operating in this area for over three months.
According to Johor State Immigration Director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus, they often claim to be collecting funds for religious schools or institutions to draw sympathy from the public.
While enforcement raids were carried out at this same night market in January, the issue persists, with new individuals stepping in to continue these activities.
Some of these foreign beggars and charity collectors manage to collect as much as RM400 daily, amounting to an impressive RM12,000 each month.
