Filipino Maid Borrows RM10K From Loan Shark Using Employer As Guarantor Without Consent

Employer had no idea their personal details were used for a loan without consent.
A shocking story has surfaced, revealing the risks that employers of foreign maids might face.

A Filipino maid in Malaysia borrowed over RM10,000 from loan sharks, using her employer’s personal details as a guarantor without permission.

This bold act set off a chain of events, causing immense stress and harassment for the family.

Harassment and safety risks exposed

The situation quickly escalated when the maid, unable to repay her loan, inadvertently dragged her employer and their family into the chaos.

According to Kosmo!, loan sharks, unable to contact the maid, resorted to disturbing tactics, including sending food deliveries as cash-on-delivery transactions.

The goal? To get the maid to communicate with the loan sharks through the delivery rider, placing the employer’s household under intense pressure.

The employer, who had known the maid for a decade and described her as hardworking and well-behaved, was shocked to find out that their trusted maid had secretly become involved with loan sharks.

I never imagined she would get into something like this,” the employer revealed.

What makes this case even more troubling is that the maid had provided the employer’s personal information to the illegal loan syndicates as a form of guarantee.

Since foreign maids in Malaysia are not legally permitted to take out loans, the loan sharks often demand personal information from employers to secure the loan.

Datuk Seri Michael Chong, the Chief of the Complaints and Public Services Bureau of the Malaysian Chinese Association, commented on the issue, highlighting the risks to employers’ privacy and safety.

This not only violates the employer’s privacy but also opens the door to serious safety threats,” he said.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Chong pointed out that many maids have provided personal details of their employer’s family members to loan shark syndicates before leaving the country at the end of their contract. This puts employers in danger, as they unknowingly become targets.

The employer involved in this case has since filed a police report, and the matter has been referred to the respective embassy for further investigation.

Chong strongly advised employers to be cautious when hiring and managing foreign maids to prevent such incidents from happening again.
