The mother of 24-year-old Soo Yu Jian, who died following an explosion at HELP University’s Bukit Damansara campus, recently carried out a quiet act of charity in memory of her son.
Social activist Kuan Chee Heng, also known as Uncle Kentang, shared in a Facebook post that he was informed to meet a woman at a supermarket in Bandar Utama.
Donated groceries in son’s memory
According to him, the woman wished to sponsor groceries and daily necessities for 10 underprivileged families.
She came with her eldest son and carefully selected many daily items and food,” he wrote.

After completing the purchases, four shopping carts filled with supplies were loaded into his van.
“As I was about to leave and wished her well, her tears suddenly flowed,” he said.
She then told him that the donations were made in memory of her son, Soo Yu Jian, who lost his life in the university explosion.
‘May you rest in peace, Yu Jian’
Kuan said he was shocked upon hearing the news and offered her comfort.
“May you rest in peace, Yu Jian. Your mother told me you are now in heaven, always remembered and loved. She misses you very much,” he wrote.

He also thanked the mother for performing good deeds in honour of her late son, adding that the 10 families will soon receive the donated items.
Earlier reports stated that the incident happened on Jan 12 at about 11.40 am at HELP University’s Bukit Damansara campus.
Yu Jian, an intern technician, was repairing an air-conditioning compressor with two colleagues when it suddenly exploded.
He sustained severe injuries and was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment, where he later passed away.
Nine others were reported injured in the incident.
