Living as an expatriate feels like constantly unlocking new experiences and gaining deeper insights into the country’s culture, traditions, and way of life.
Recently, an expatriate working in Kuala Lumpur took to social media to express his amazement upon discovering yet another public holiday, just days after a string of previous ones had ended.
This was shared by the expat, @markguim, through Threads and instantly garnered the attention of netizens.
“Life as an expat in Malaysia: Our KL office is back from the public holiday this week, and I just learned there’s another public holiday next week 😅” – he wrote.

By the way, in 2025, several public holidays conveniently fall near weekends, allowing Malaysians to enjoy multiple long weekends throughout the year.
Some of these include Thaipusam, Labour Day, and Malaysia Day, all of which provide additional days of rest for the workforce.
For expatriates unfamiliar with Malaysia’s holiday culture, this can be a surprising adjustment.
For expats like Markguim, he was probably stunned by the number of public holidays Malaysians enjoy yearly.
In the comment section, he revealed that he found out about the upcoming public holiday in a meeting he had.

Netizens shared their thoughts
“It’s my 3rd year of working in KL and I love it! I learned from my friends that it’s also good to know the school holidays too since it also affects traffic.”

“Welcome to Malaysian holidays. We take a break from our holidays to work”

“I used to have a boss from Aussie and he complained Malaysia has too many public holidays. But we are a multiracial nation and of course, we love holidays.”
