MYANMAR – Angel, also known as Ma Kyal Sin, wore a black t-shirt carrying a simple message: “Everything will be OK” before she was killed during a protest on the streets of Mandalay.

Yesterday (March 4), the 19-year-old Taekwondo champion and dancer was shot in the head by security forces during the bloodiest day of crackdowns on protests that have erupted throughout Myanmar since the military coup on February 1 according to the United Nations.

Angel knew she might die if she joined the protests, but she still chose to soldier on and placed herself at the frontlines. Photos of her in the said t-shirt has now gone viral globally on social media with many hailing her as a hero.

“She is a hero for our country,” said Ma Cho Nwe Oo, one of Angel’s close friends and a fellow protester.

According to Reuters, prior to the police opening fire, Angel could be heard in a video shouting, “We will not run” and “Blood must not be shed”.

Knowing that her life was at risk, Angel took great pains in posting her medical details on Facebook and requested for her body to be donated if she were to be killed.

After hearing of her death, one of Angel’s friends shared a text message that she had sent before the protest began which read: “This might be the last time I say this. Love you so much. Don’t forget.”

Another protester, Myat Thu told Reuters that she recalled Angel kicking open a water pipe so that protesters could wash the tear gas from their eyes.

“She cares for and protects others as comrades.”
