If you’ve passed by Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) at night and seen the building glowing in green, you might have wondered what it means.
Recently, this green light caught the attention of netizens after a user, @afiq__g, posted a photo on Threads showing the bright neon lights on PPUM’s main building.
In his post, he shared that many people may not know the real reason behind the colour.

That green light shows that an organ donation surgery has been completed,” he wrote.
A sign of a life saved
The viral post led to many people expressing surprise and admiration.
In response, PPUM’s official social media account confirmed the claim and explained further.
The hospital said the green light is turned on to mark a successful organ transplant, where a patient receives an organ from either a living or deceased donor.

It is a symbol that someone’s generous donation has given another person a new chance at life.
Green is the colour that represents hope, healing, and new beginnings for our patients,” said PPUM in a seperate Facebook post on July 8, 2024.
They also added that on that particular night, one transplant case was successfully carried out.
The building was lit in green as a quiet but powerful tribute to both the donor and the patient.
PPUM explained that the colour green is not chosen randomly as it’s a combination of blue and yellow, often seen as colours of calmness and nature. In the context of organ donation, green becomes a symbol of rebirth and continuity.
They also mentioned that the colour green is widely recognised in global organ donation campaigns.
Not just for donations
In some cases, PPUM uses lighting to support special days and causes.
For example, during World Earth Day, the building may feature both green and blue lights to match the event’s theme. Some countries even combine green, blue, and brown lights.
However, for organ donation specifically, green is always used alone to carry the message.
In the same post, PPUM gently addressed confusion online about the lights, explaining that due to technical reasons, green lights sometimes dominate.
Maybe it was just a small misunderstanding. Don’t fight over it,” the admin joked.
The hospital ended its post with a heartfelt reminder: “Every time the green light shines, it tells a quiet story of love, generosity, and survival.”
