Mount Kinabalu has long been on the bucket list of avid hikers thanks to its breathtaking view and exhilarating route leading all the way to the top.
However, due to its challenging landscape, it is important to have a set of essentials ready with you before you set out to conquer the majestic mountain in all of its natural glory.
As one who has scaled Mount Kinabalu in the past, here are the 10 essentials you absolutely need for your hiking adventure.
Durable backpack
Climbing up Mount Kinabalu is a whole new playing field compared to hiking up Bukit Gedung or Penang Hill as it requires more stamina and energy to reach the top.
Getting a durable backpack is undoubtedly vital as you have quite a bit of items to put into it. Make sure it’s sturdy so that you don’t waste a single moment feeling uncomfortable and weighed down.
Plenty of clothes (but not the entire wardrobe)
The hike up to Mount Kinabalu can be rather chilly so it’s highly recommended that you bring a complete set of clothing to keep you warm throughout the journey.
I’d strongly advise hikers to get a jacket that acts as a windbreaker, four long-sleeved tops, two sets of shorts and lightweight outfits, one set of workout clothing (long sleeved top and pants with thermal features), a raincoat, gloves, beanie, and socks.
First aid kit
Climbing up Mount Kinabalu is no child’s play so be sure to have a first aid kit ready by your side. The last thing you’d want is to suffer cuts and bruises but have no bandages to stem the bleeding.
Headlamp
During the hike before the sun’s up, be sure to get a headlamp as it will help light the way and reduce the risk of injuries. Choose the right headlamp that fits your head comfortably and don’t forget to also charge the batteries beforehand too.
Extra snacks/energy bars
In my past experience, I discovered that I got hungry pretty quickly during the hike even before I reached the top. Thus, it’s important to have a small stash of snacks/energy bars ready.
You can opt snacking on Snickers, granola bars, or nuts for that extra burst of energy to reach the final destination.
Drinking water
As you’d probably know by now, staying hydrated is the cardinal rule of hiking as you’d be sweating profusely along the way.
While 2 litres of water would be sufficient, you can also decide to bring only 1.5 litres of water instead if it’s too heavy for you to carry.
Having ready-to-drink water is crucial especially if you get lost as you’ll need to drink up while you’re waiting for a rescue team. You wouldn’t want to risk falling victim to dehydration, right?
Small backpack
The purpose of this small backpack is for you to store your first aid kit, ID, cash, drinking water, headlamp, phone, and camera before heading to the top from the hostel.
I’d strongly advice you getting one that’s light, foldable, and of a striking color to catch people’s attention in case of emergencies.
Trekking/Hiking pole
Trekking/hiking poles are meant to reduce the amount of pressure and body weight exerted on the knees, especially among older people.
However, using them can be a little tricky and not necessary for all as it depends on your personal preference and how you utilize it.
Toiletries
Yes, even during hikes it’s necessary to keep yourself fresh too! Make sure you have a toothbrush, toothpaste, a small towel, and sanitary pads/ tampons handy.
Personal documents & cash
Keeping your personal documents with you can prove to be helpful in any kind of getaways, including hikes. Make sure that it’s kept in a pouch within your sight to discourage potential theft.
Also, bring along some cash as you’ll never know what may cause you to spend more that what you planned for.
Only a guide
So there you have it – the list of essential items you’ll need for your next hiking trip up Mount Kinabalu. However, do note that it’s all based on my personal experience so if you think there’s more/less stuff to be taken, feel free to do so!
