If you’ve been putting off thinking about retirement… this might be your sign to start.
Starting 2026, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) is updating its savings targets and honestly, it gives a pretty clear answer to one big question:
How much do Malaysians actually need to retire comfortably?
And the short answer? Probably more than you think.
First, your EPF money is now split differently

Let’s break this down simply.
Your EPF savings will now be divided into three parts:
- 75% goes into your Retirement Account
- 15% into your Sejahtera Account
- 10% into your Flexible Account
The idea here is to help you balance long-term savings with things you might need sooner.
So instead of everything being locked away, you now have a bit more flexibility.
You can withdraw early… but there’s a catch

Okay, this part sounds exciting at first.
You can now withdraw money before age 55 but only if you already have a lot saved.
Here’s the minimum you need:
- 2026: RM1.1 million
- 2027: RM1.2 million
- 2028: RM1.3 million
Anything above that amount, you can take out.
So yes, early withdrawal is possible… but realistically, this mainly benefits those who already have strong savings.
The “minimum” savings is going up too
Now here’s the part that might hit a bit harder.
EPF is increasing the minimum savings you should have:
- 2026: RM290,000
- 2027: RM340,000
- 2028: RM390,000
This is basically EPF saying:
“With rising costs and longer lifespans, this is the bare minimum you’ll need.”
There are now 3 levels of “how well you’ll retire”
To make things clearer, EPF grouped savings into 3 tiers.
Let’s put it in simple terms:
RM390,000 — Basic
You’ll get by, but lifestyle will be quite simple.
RM650,000 — Comfortable
You can live more steadily without stressing too much about money.
RM1.3 million — Very comfortable
You’ll have more freedom to actually enjoy retirement, not just survive it.
So… where do you stand?
By 2028, RM390,000 will be the minimum target.
But if you’re being real with yourself, most people would probably want to aim closer to RM650,000 or more.
And if you somehow hit RM1.1 million and above, you even unlock early withdrawals.
