In this modern era, more and more restaurants and business premises are switching to cashless forms of payment in a bid to smoothen the transaction process and reduce error.
However, there is still a sizable amount of the population who still prefer to make payment with cash as they’re not as tech-savvy as younger folks.
Not cashless? No coffee
The topic was brought up for debate once again following a Threads post by a netizen who recounted how an elderly couple tried buying coffee at a cafe.
According to her, she was enjoying her morning Joe at the cafe when the couple stepped in to make an order.
The wife placed the order while the husband was already seated. Suddenly, they couldn’t pay because they only had cash on hand.

“In the end, they left and headed for another cafe, which is also cashless at certain outlets,” she wrote.
The OP added that businesses should consider offering both cashless and cash payments so that it won’t be a burden to those who don’t know how to make online payments, such as the elderly.
Online debate
In the comment section, there were some who echoed the OP’s sentiments and said cash should still be accepted as it’s still recognised as a legal tender and that not every senior citizen knows how to make cashless payments.

On the other hand, some defended cashless payments, with one netizen, who claimed to be working in the F&B industry, arguing that it was necessary to prevent theft and fake bank notes, as well as eliminating the need to go to the bank to get small change.
