You’d expect that elderly folks would enjoy their sunset years by living comfortably on their retirement money or spend more time with their family members. However, not every senior citizen has the same luxury.
A clip which showed an old man eking out a living by working as a frog mascot recently went viral on TikTok, where it touched many netizens’ hearts and sparked widespread sympathy for him.
Old man works as frog mascot in Johor
In the 34-second clip shared by @thaqifahhhh_, it showed the elderly man sitting on the curb while having a meal during his break time.
He was also seen donning a frog mascot costume, where the mascot’s head was removed and placed right beside him so he could eat.
Along the way, a passerby is seen putting some money into a donation box placed in front of the old man, prompting him to express a word of thanks towards the kind donor.
In the caption, the OP named Syira said her initial intention was to film her kids having fun at Dataran Pontian in Johor but found her attention gravitating towards the old man instead.
This pakcik (uncle) reminds me of my dad back in the kampung. The time was over 11pm and he was just about to have his meal. I hope his burdens will be eased,” she wrote.
She also called on those who would be attending an event near the area to snap a photo of the old man’s QR code or bank account number and share it so that others could donate money to him.
Netizens express sympathy
The clip has since garnered 1.1 million views at the time of writing and netizens were left teary-eyed by the old man’s struggle to earn a living.
‘Behind a cute frog is an uncle that’s working hard to earn a mouth of rice.’
‘After this, I’ll donate to whichever frog (mascot) whenever I can. Who knew that a frog that looks so cheery on the outside is actually hiding a father within.’
‘I’m reminded of my father who has passed away.’
