As the old saying goes, “Age is just a number”, and this was definitely true for a pair of lovebirds at a nursing home in Penang.
After just three months of knowing and dating each other, 67-year-old Wu Caixing and 91-year-old Hu Ruirong (transliteration) decided that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together and got married on Tuesday (Mar 17).
Expressed desire to marry despite old age
In an interview with China Press, the bride, Hu said her husband didn’t pop the question to her and that she desired to live with him.
I wanted to get married and live with him, so we got married. Also, I’m not afraid of anything as I’m very old. But I’m very happy right now,” she said.
Hu revealed that she had been single her entire life as she spent much of her youth taking care of her ageing parents.
Due to poor health, she moved into Silver Jubilee Home For The Aged six or seven years ago and patiently waited for Mr. Right to walk into her life, which came into fruition when Wu came in December 2025.
Spending time together
Kathleen Maniam, the Head of Admission & CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) at the home, told China Press that Hu and Wu were initially seated at adjacent tables in the dining hall.
Over time, they began to have frequent conversations and eventually love bloomed between them, which saw them having evening walks while holding hands or going out shopping.
Kathleen also noted that Hu was the one who made the first move on Wu.
When the couple expressed their wish to marry, the home conducted interviews with them separately.
Wu said he cared for Hu and wanted to be by her side forever despite having mobility issues.
Got married
In order to fulfil the couple’s wishes and hold a proper celebration, the home organised the wedding, which was sponsored by charitable businesses, community organisations, and individual donors.
A special touch was also added to the joyous occasion, with the couple’s best man and bridesmaid, Li Mingshi and Zhu Ailia, also a couple themselves who met at the same home and have been in a relationship for two years.
Kathleen said she purposely chose Li and Zhu for the roles as she wanted to make the wedding more meaningful.
