Yesterday (June 9), Malaysians were saddened and outraged when news of a bus crashing into a Perodua Alza led to the deaths of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students along the East-West Highway.
Out of the 15 victims, 13 were killed at the scene, while two died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Bus driver in UPSI crash had 18 outstanding summonses
Aside from the horrific human toll that the crash brought, a new shocking detail was recently revealed following a police investigation.
According to Harian Metro, it reported that the bus driver was found to have a total of 18 unsettled traffic summonses.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said out of the summonses, 13 were for speeding, one relating to an accident, three for failing to wear a seatbelt, and one for not having a third brake light.
Aside from the 18 summonses, the bus driver was found to be driving a vehicle that had 21 summonses issued against it.
A task force consisting of PDRM, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), and other relevant agencies, are currently collaborating to conduct investigations into the crash.
Faulty brakes blamed for crash
Meanwhile, the bus driver, Mohd Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle, expressed his apologies to the victims and claimed the crash was caused by a brake failure.
“I tried everything I could but without air pressure, the brakes and handbrake were useless. I couldn’t even change gears.
“I remember swerving past at least four vehicles, including a lorry. The last one had a dashcam. I wasn’t speeding I was trying not to hit anyone,” he said.
