Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has issued a reminder to road users after finding that many drivers and motorcyclists are still unaware of the meaning of a common road sign that allows them to turn left when the traffic light is red — provided the lane is clear.
According to DBKL, checks revealed that a significant number of motorists continue to remain stationary at intersections even when there are no oncoming vehicles or pedestrians, despite the clear signage displayed.
A basic rule taught since driving school
Road signs are one of the first things Malaysians learn when preparing for their driving license, with each colour and symbol carrying crucial safety messages.
These signs serve as guides, whether warning drivers of danger, indicating directions or setting speed limits.

However, DBKL noted that some road users remain unaware of the sign that reads “Belok Kiri Jika Tiada Kenderaan Dan Pejalan Kaki” (Turn Left If No Vehicles And Pedestrians), which is usually placed near traffic light intersections.
DBKL issues public reminder
In a Facebook post, DBKL highlighted the issue and uploaded several images showing the sign installed near a zebra crossing at an intersection in the city centre.
The council said many drivers and riders appeared either unfamiliar with the sign or simply failed to notice it, leading to unnecessary stops and slower traffic flow.
You may turn left on red, but only when it’s safe
DBKL clarified that the sign permits drivers to turn left even when the traffic light is red, as long as the path is clear and safe.
Make sure there are no vehicles coming from other directions, no pedestrians crossing, and always prioritise safety before moving,” the statement read.

“If there are vehicles already passing through the intersection or pedestrians waiting to cross, you must stop.”
The council stressed that the permission to turn left is not a privilege, but a responsibility that comes with strict conditions.
Remember, this allowance is not a special advantage. It is a responsibility — we must obey road signs and prevent accidents for smoother traffic flow in Kuala Lumpur,” it added.
DBKL’s reminder serves as a call for all road users to stay alert, follow traffic regulations and ensure safer, more efficient roads in the capital.
