According to Walter, despite his son breaking the Asian record and qualifying for three events, Zy was overlooked in favour of a lower-ranked swimmer.

Walter has questioned the selection process by the Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) and Malaysian Para Swimming Association (Prepma).

According to Scoop, PCM president stated that athletes for the Paris Paralympics were selected based on performance timing rather than world rankings. Despite a transparent selection process, Zy Lee Kher was ranked third due to lower medal-winning probabilities compared to Syaiful and Imaan.

Walter believes this choice is unjust, lacking transparency, and overlooks Zy’s second-highest ranking and merit-based qualification.

Zy Lee Kher is a national para swimmer from Malaysia who has represented his country for five years.

He has won multiple medals at the Asian Youth Para Games 2021, including gold in the 200m freestyle S1-5. In the ASEAN Para Games 2023, he secured two gold medals and set a new games record in the 200m individual medley SM5.
