Customers Charged RM6 For RM616 Lobster At SG Restaurant, Return To Pay Balance

A rare show of honesty.
A seafood restaurant in Singapore feared the worst after it was discovered that they had severely undercharged a group of diners for a lobster dish.

To the restaurant owner’s surprise and relief, the customers returned to the restaurant to pay the difference and were promptly rewarded for their honesty.

Charged RM6 instead of RM616

According to the restaurant’s owner Dai Xiangying (transliteration), she told Shin Min Daily News that the customers, a family of four, came on Feb 18.

She added the group initially wanted to order a single Australian lobster that cost S$168 (approx. RM517), but they eventually settled for two smaller Australian lobsters as the former was sold out.

Dai noted that the Australian lobster is considered to be the most expensive item on the menu.

However, due to carelessness on the restaurant’s end, the customers were charged S$2 (approx. RM6) instead of S$200 (approx. RM616) for the lobsters.

Came back to pay difference

CCTV footage showed two young girls returning to the restaurant with the receipt and told Dai about the undercharge.

At first, Dai was bewildered as she thought the girls wanted a refund due to overcharging or whether there had been a system error.

But when she finally realised what had happened, she saw that the restaurant had indeed made an error in the bill.

In a Facebook post, Dai praised the girls for their honesty, adding that their behavior was starkly different from other customers.

“We’ve had customers haggling for change over napkins and tea, and others have owed me money after running off without paying their bill.

Having worked in the restaurant industry for so long…this is the first time in my life I’ve seen a customer voluntarily return to pay for an error on our part.”

Gave angpao to girls

Touched by the girls’ honesty, Dai gifted the girls an angpao each as a token of gratitude.

She pointed out in the post that “such sincerity and kindness is more valuable than Australian lobsters.”

Dai also told customers that the restaurant will continue to uphold honest business practices though there might be human errors made along the way.
