Nasi lemak is known as one of the best and most beloved dishes among Malaysians thanks to its aromatic taste and mouthwatering ingredients.
Unfortunately, this national dish is making headlines for negative reasons after a vendor snapped at a customer for cursing him out over certain ingredients being sold separately.
‘Yes, we sell them separately’
In a now-viral post shared by Penang Kini on Facebook, the vendor called out a customer who bought nasi lemak from their stall in Balik Pulau but proceeded to verbally berate them.

Apparently, the customer became angry after the vendor disclosed that the egg and ikan bilis (anchovies) were sold separately and doesn’t come together with the rice.
In the caption, the vendor said they did so as not all customers wanted an egg or ikan bilis to be added into their nasi lemak, adding it will only be added upon request.
‘No complaints in 2 years’
The vendor said no grouses were raised over its practice of selling eggs and ikan bilis separately over the past two years.
You then say we might as well just sell rice only. Well, that’s up to me to decide what I want to sell because we don’t add ikan bilis and eggs unless people want them.

“Even after we’ve explained to you why, you start cursing and swearing, saying things like ‘f*** your mother’ and so on…I think our prices are the cheapest as you can’t get prices like this elsewhere,” the caption read.
Netizens disagree
While the vendor felt that there was nothing wrong in selling eggs and ikan bilis separately, netizens begged to differ, with many saying that those ingredients normally is included in nasi lemak.
‘In my opinion, I think the vendor should set ikan bilis and egg as part of the package, then ask people whether they want them or not. If they don’t, don’t include them. This is because nasi lemak usually comes with ikan bilis and egg.’

‘Hahaha. First time reading (about ikan bilis and egg) being sold separately.’

‘Eh! The nasi lemak is quite unusual. Even I’d be shocked. Ikan bilis and egg are the most important parts and it’s good that the customer spoke up because over the past 2 years, many people have been surprised but didn’t dare to say it out loud. One person finally pointed out something true and the vendor got all emotional.’
