The world is still recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, but now, another health crisis is making headlines in Japan.
A content creator has issued a stark warning to travellers, advising them to avoid visiting the country due to a “terrifying” influenza outbreak.

Severe flu outbreak in Japan
In a video posted on her Douyin account on January 7, the content creator, Kiki highlighted the severe influenza situation unfolding in Japan.
Less than a month later, the tragic death of Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, who passed away after contracting influenza during a trip to Japan over Chinese New Year, brought attention to the warning Kiki had shared.
Kiki’s post revealed the alarming extent of the flu outbreak, with the Japanese government issuing a red notice due to the severity of the crisis.
According to Kiki, this is the worst influenza outbreak the country has seen in the past decade.
Kiki’s personal experience with influenza

Having recently returned to Japan, Kiki shared her own experience of falling ill shortly after her arrival.
She described how her body began to ache, followed by a rise in temperature, which peaked at 38.3°C.
Despite taking medication, Kiki said the illness continued to affect her, and she noted that nine out of ten of her friends were also struck by the flu.
This is really bad, and truly terrifying,” she said.
Kiki strongly urged people to reconsider any plans to visit Japan at this time, saying, “If you can avoid coming to Japan for now, please do so.”
All potential travellers are advised to stay updated on the outbreak and take precautions to protect themselves from the rapidly spreading illness.
