Company Refuses To Accept M’sian Woman’s Resignation, Tells Her To Find A Replacement Before Leaving

You can leave, but only after you replace yourself?
A Malaysian woman has sparked discussion online after claiming that her employer refused to accept her resignation letter and insisted she find a replacement before being allowed to leave.

In a post shared on social media, the woman said she had already submitted her resignation, but was shocked by her company’s response.

I’ve already submitted my resignation letter, but the company refuses to accept it and even told me to find a replacement. If I can’t find someone like me, they won’t let me leave,” she wrote.

She added that she was already mentally exhausted from working there, even though she did not yet have another job lined up.

I’m already tired working here, even though I don’t have a backup job yet.”

Resignation is a notice, not a request

The post quickly drew strong reactions from netizens, many of whom pointed out that a resignation letter is not something that requires an employer’s approval.

“A resignation letter is simply a notice, not a request for permission. As long as you serve your notice period, you’re within your rights to leave,” one commenter said.

Another explained that employees should properly document their resignation submission.

“A resignation letter is a notice to the company and does not need acceptance. Leave a copy with HR, keep another copy for yourself, and note the date, time, person, and department you served it to.”

Some netizens also highlighted that the tone of a resignation letter matters.

“Did you write it as asking for permission or firmly informing? If you write ‘May I tender my resignation’, of course they’ll bully you. You should clearly state your end-of-service date.”

“Finding a replacement is not your job”

Others advised the woman to check her offer letter and employment contract carefully.

“Please check your offer letter and confirmation letter that you signed. See if finding a replacement is stated as your responsibility. If it’s not there, you can tell HR it’s not your job.”

Another commenter suggested pushing back formally.

“You can revert with a stronger note saying you’ve checked legal references and your resignation takes effect upon first submission. HR is responsible for finding a replacement, not you.”

Some netizens expressed disbelief that such practices still exist.

“It’s 2026 and there are still people who think resignation letters need to be accepted?”

Report authorities if harassment continues

Several commenters went further, advising the woman to report the matter if the company continued to pressure her.

“Check where in the offer letter it says you must find a replacement before resigning. If it’s not there, report them to the Labour Department.”

Another added bluntly:

“Finish your notice, no need to come after that. If they insist, report JTK (Malaysia’s Labour Department.)”
