Weddings are occasions where guests are expected to give the newlyweds a certain amount of money as a way to help them cover costs, as well as congratulate them.
A woman recently took to social media to express her shock over a colleague’s unabashed demeanor in gifting a paltry angpau amount at her wedding.
Cost RM300-RM400 per pax
In the anonymous post, the OP wrote that although her wedding wasn’t held at a five-star-hotel, she had calculated that it would cost her an average of RM300-RM400 per person.
She also conceded that weddings weren’t money-making occasions and merely wanted guests to witness and celebrate the occasion with her.
However, her excitement was severely dampened no thanks to a certain colleague.
Gave only RM80 in angpau money
The OP described the colleague as one that she wasn’t particularly close with, but she genuinely believed that her colleague was supportive of her marriage as she had promised to bring her family along.
But when she opened the angpaus after the wedding, she was shocked to find out that this colleague had only given RM80.
“I immediately went to check the guest list and discovered that my colleague had brought three others to the wedding.
“Even if I were to calculate very conservatively, it should cost RM1,200 for four people but she gave only RM80. This means I actually paid over RM1,000 out of pocket to treat the whole family to a meal,” she wrote.
‘I don’t know how to face her’
The OP said she was stunned by the meagre amount and found that RM80 for a total of four people attending the wedding was unacceptable.
She also said that she doesn’t know how to face her colleague at work without feeling awkward as she’s torn over whether to let the matter go.
She also added that things would have turned out better if the colleague chose to turn up alone or not attend the wedding if she was facing financial restraints.
“I genuinely wouldn’t have minded if that happened. But to bring three family members and giving only RM80…I really want to ask this: how close do you think we actually are?”
