M’sian Slams Rich Relative Who Gave His Kids RM2 Angpau, Says ‘It’s No Longer The 90s’

"RM2 isn't enough to buy a cup of Teh O!"
During Chinese New Year, adults would give young children and single individuals angpaus as part of the celebration.

While many have debated what amount is considered to be reasonable, a netizen recently complained on social media about how his kids were given a meagre amount of angpau money from a well-to-do relative.

Rich financially but stingy IRL?

In a lengthy post, the OP began by describing his relative’s background, saying that the relative lived in a terrace house and often traveled overseas.

He added that every CNY, there was an “unspoken rule”, whereby adults would give angpaus that contained RM5 or RM10.

However, that rule didn’t seem to apply to the relative, who only gave RM2 every single year, much to the OP’s chagrin.

“The relative’s kids receive hundreds of angpaus every year. If we give an average of RM10 and they give RM2, how much do they earn in “net profit” every year?,” he questioned.

The OP also went on to allege that aside from money, the relative also skimmed on CNY snacks being offered to guests, claiming that only plain water and a packet of junk food.

“I’m not asking for lavish food, but couldn’t you at least show some courtesy once a year?”

‘Where’s the sincerity?’

Turning his attention back to the angpaus, the OP said the relative’s act of giving RM2 angpaus was a telltale sign of insincerity.

What kind of sincerity is RM2? That’s the pricing in the 1990s and nowadays it’s not even enough for a cup of Teh O.

“I know some people will say I’m being petty. But let me say this: angpaus aren’t investments or about calculating return on investment (ROI). Rather, it’s about the relationships and atmosphere,” he added.
