If you’ve ever been to Chew Jetty in Penang, you’d probably come across a mural that was hand drawn by a talented individual for others to enjoy.
A tourist from China did the same but instead found herself on the receiving end of brickbats from netizens as she didn’t get prior approval to “modify” an existing mural.
Added panda to mural at Chew Jetty
The woman shared the entire process on her personal Xiaohongshu (XHS) account, where she usually posts about her paintings which are based on real life objects.
In the clip, she is seen paying a visit to Chew Jetty and comes across a mural of a woman sitting on a scooter.

Just as the tourist took out her paintbrushes and was about to begin painting a panda on it, she was stopped by a man who was presumably one of the residents, where he told her “Cannot” repeatedly in Mandarin.

However, she merely brushed him off and continued with her painting, attracting the attention of several other tourists who passed by.

She also expressed pride in the clip that while painting, she was able to share more about the cities of Szechuan and Chongqing.
Towards the end of the clip, it showed the tourist completing her painting of the panda and posing for a photo with it.

Online backlash
In the comment section, netizens slammed the tourist for her “addition” to the mural, saying that it was a blatant show of disrespect.
‘She is an artist herself, yet doesn’t know how to respect other people’s works.’

‘So disrespectful. This is Malaysia, not Chengdu.’

A netizen listed out several laws which the tourist had allegedly violated, where she could face jail time and a fine.
