A man from China was ordered to sit six days in jail by a court in Singapore after he pleaded guilty to one charge of outrage of modesty.
This comes after he reportedly molested a woman inside the lift at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) by smacking her butt.
Slapped woman’s butt inside lift
The Straits Times (ST) reported that the accused, Hu Guisheng, had left club Ce La Vi located on the 57th floor of MBS on Mar 8 at 1.34am after having drinks with friends.
CCTV footage showed that the victim entered the lift along with Hu, who was holding his wife’s hand.
When the lift arrived at the first floor, the victim held the door for Hu and his wife to exit first.
Hu then waited for everyone to step out before standing next to the victim, where he stole a glance at her buttocks and slapped it on its left side.
The woman tried to prevent Hu from leaving the scene with his wife and friends and notified a security guard about what had happened.
Hu was eventually arrested at 2.50am and later released on bail at about 2pm on the same day.
Offered compensation and wanted to apologise publicly
In court, the prosecution asked for Hu to be jailed for one to three weeks, saying he had committed sexual exploitation by smacking the victim’s butt, which were “more intrusive” than touching other body parts.
Hu’s lawyer, Peter Ong, requested for a fine instead, claiming Hu was “remorseful” and had offered to apologise publicly and give S$5,000 (approx. RM16,200) in compensation to the victim.
However, it was rejected by the victim.
Ong also said the incident negatively impacted Hu’s business, which is reported to be on the brink of financial collapse.
However, the prosecution said Hu had incurred the financial losses due to his own actions and thus cannot be regarded as a mitigating factor.
District Judge Janet Wang sided with the prosecution during sentencing, saying a degree of sexual exploitation had taken place.
She also added that Hu waited for everyone else to leave the lift before molesting the victim, noting that the touch was not “fleeting” and carried some degree of criminal force.
