For some, having a massage is a perfect way for them to unwind and let out some steam after enduring a hard day at work.
Unfortunately for this woman from Guangzhou, China, what was supposed to be an ordinary massage session nearly turned her into a vegetable as it triggered a stroke.
China woman suffers stroke after massage session
According to Hong Kong 01, the woman went for a massage on her neck and shoulders after she experienced discomfort around her neck and spine.
The next day however, she noticed that her left hand had gone completely numb and weak, so much to the point where she couldn’t lift a glass a water.
This then prompted her friends to rush her to the hospital, where a piece of terrible news was broken to her — she was found to have suffered acute cerebral infarction.

For the uninitiated, cerebral infarction is a kind of stroke where blood flow to the brain is obstructed, which can lead to permanent disability or even death.
Fortunately for the woman, her saving grace was that she arrived at the hospital in time because if she failed to do so, one side of her body would have been totally paralysed, which is also known as hemiplegia.
Doctors highlight dangers of neck massages
Given the fact that the carotid artery is located close to the skin on the neck and is prone to injury or damaged caused by aggressive pressure, doctors have warned against placing too much force on the area.

Activities that increase the risk of the neck getting damaged include rapid or violent neck rotations, heavy weightlifting and forceful neck massages.
Additionally, should one experience symptoms such as neck pain, dizziness, headache, pulsating tinnitus, facial drooping, slurred speech, or numbness or weakness in one side of the body, they are urged to seek medical attention immediately.
