China woman steps on onion slice and falls at market
According to a report by China Press, the incident took place in Nantong, Jiangsu, where the 62-year-old woman had taken her granddaughter from school to the the market to buy groceries.

While there, she stepped on an unidentified object on the ground and fell face-first onto the ground, prompting her granddaughter to call the police for help.
Following a police investigation, it was revealed that the object which caused the woman to fall was an onion slice.
A hospital examination later confirmed that the woman had suffered a distal radius fracture in her right arm, dental damage, and dysfunction of her right wrist joint due to the fall.

Demanded RM122k compensation for fall
After the fall, the woman went on the warpath and sued the market, where she demanded 200,000 yuan (approx. RM122,000) in compensation.
However, the market argued that they had placed warning signs at the entrance cautioning pedestrians about slippery floors, installed anti-slip tiles in each aisle, broadcast safety reminders, and arranged for cleaning staff to maintain cleanliness.
The market also alleged that the woman was wearing high-heels at the time and failed to watch her step, claiming that the accident was due to her own negligence and that she should bear responsibility for her injuries.

The court later ruled in the woman’s favour, saying that while the market had taken safety measures beforehand, including its staff cleaning the area 10 minutes before the fall, the onion slice wasn’t cleared up in the process.
It also said the market had significant deficiencies in its cleaning management, which contributed to the woman’s fall, therefore making it liable for the accident.
