If you’re a fan of all things spicy and flavourful, then chances are that you’d probably fancy a meal of hotpot when given a chance, especially on cold, rainy days.
Unfortunately for a young woman in China, a hotpot meal turned to be her last meal as she passed away after eating it with friends.
China woman has sore throat after eating hotpot
According to a Apr 13 report by Chinese news outlet Morning News, the 26-year-old woman had worked overtime and decided to end the day by having spicy hotpot with her friends.

During the meal, she noticed that she was experiencing a sore throat. Thinking that it was just a minor side effect of eating spicy food, the woman simply brushed it aside and went home after the meal.
Goes to hospital, dies 10 minutes later
The next day, the pain took a turn for the worse and the woman began to experience breathing difficulties, prompting her to head to the hospital.
Just 10 minutes after she was admitted, she suddenly collapsed to the ground and though medical staff tried to save her, it proved to be too late.
Later, it was reported that she had suffered acute epiglottitis, a condition where one’s organ located at the back of the throat becomes inflamed, which leads to airflow obstruction into the lungs.

Symptoms of acute epiglottitis include fever, sore throat, drooling, breathlessness, and unusual, high-pitched sound when breathing in, commonly known as stridor.
Not the first case
This isn’t the first time something similar had occurred, with a previous case taking place in Zhejiang last May.
A man in his 30s went to the hospital for a sore throat and told the doctor he had taken medicine after having a flu for days but noticed the pain in his throat growing worse.

The doctor later realised he was actually suffering from acute epiglottitis and admitted him to the hospital. During the treatment, the man suddenly stopped breathing, along with his heartbeat.
Thankfully, staff were able to save his life after performing CPR and an emergency tracheotomy on him.
