During festive occasions like Chinese New Year, lots of delicious food would be served to family members and friends. As such, the tendency to eat way more than one should is quite high.

China woman has 5kg of food removed from stomach due to overeating

According to a report by China Press, the 41-year-old woman surnamed Zhang had a habit of binge eating and that didn’t slow down one bit during CNY.

The Chinese daily reported that she began experiencing bloating and discomfort, where her stomach appeared larger than it was. However, she thought nothing of it and continued her eating habits.

Two weeks later, Zhang’s bloating worsened and she vomited frequently too. She also experienced severe pain in her abdomen, which was exacerbated by the fact that she consumed persimmons a few days before.

She was later rushed to the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, where she slipped into a coma when she was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU).

Doctors later discovered that Zhang had severe gastric distension (bloating) due to obstruction in her small intestine, resulting in gastric wall necrosis and perforations at multiple areas.

This prompted them to perform a gastrectomy and esophagojejunostomy to save her life, where they removed over 3,000 milliliters of stomach contents, including a large amount of pickled vegetables and bean sprouts, weighing 5 kilograms in total.

They also found numerous 6-centimeter gastric bezoars, which is a collection of indigestible material that forms in the stomach.

The deputy director of the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University warned the public to maintain regular meals, balance their meat and vegetables intake, reduce salt and oil intake, and drink alcohol in moderation during CNY.

He added this was especially important for the elderly, those with preexisting gastrointestinal conditions, and individuals who have undergone abdominal surgery.

He also advised against consuming large quantities of persimmons, pickled vegetables, and bean sprouts on an empty stomach or over consecutive days as these fiber-rich and hard-to-digest foods may pose serious health risks.
