Malaysia experienced a significant surge in Chinese tourist arrivals in 2024, with numbers rising to 3,725,894, marking a 130.9% increase compared to the previous year, according to Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
This remarkable growth is largely attributed to the implementation of a visa-free policy for Chinese nationals, which commenced on December 1, 2023, and has been extended through December 2026.

The policy allows Chinese tourists to enter Malaysia without a visa for stays up to 30 days, significantly easing travel barriers and enhancing Malaysia’s appeal as a tourist destination.
Improved air connectivity
In addition to the visa-free policy, improved air connectivity has played a crucial role in facilitating this influx.
Notably, China Eastern Airlines inaugurated a direct flight route connecting Xi’an, the capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, to Kuala Lumpur via Kunming in December 2024.
This new route has made travel more accessible for Chinese tourists from these regions.
According to Xin Hua News, the Malaysian government anticipates that these developments will continue to boost tourism, fostering closer cultural and economic ties between Malaysia and China.

The sustained increase in tourist arrivals is expected to have a positive impact on Malaysia’s economy, particularly in sectors such as hospitality, retail, and transportation.
As Malaysia continues to enhance its tourism infrastructure and promotional efforts, the country aims to attract even more visitors from China and other international markets in the coming years.
