‘Holiday Mood’s Gone’ — China Tourist Has Luggage Stolen At Johor Laundromat On 2nd Day Of Trip

A month-long trip cut short.
What was supposed to be a month-long vacation of fun, good food, and scenic backdrops in Malaysia quickly descended into that of a horrible nightmare for a tourist from China.

This comes after his luggage containing his personal belongings, documents, and cash were stolen from him by a man who took advantage of his exhaustion at a laundromat.

Speaking to Sin Chew Daily about his unfortunate experience, Mai Jihong (transliteration) said he had travelled to Malaysia from Guangdong and stopped by a self-service laundromat near the Larkin Bus Terminal at around 3.30am on Apr 3 to do some laundry.

He added there was only one woman sleeping inside the laundromat and another man at the time. Due to exhaustion, Mak fell asleep while waiting for his laundry to finish.

When he woke up, he found his greatest nightmare coming true before his eyes.

When I woke up an hour later to retrieve my washed clothes, I discovered my personal luggage was missing.

“After reporting the incident to the police, I asked the laundromat owner for CCTV footage to find out who took my luggage. It turned out that the man inside had taken advantage of me being asleep to steal it,” he said.

‘No mood for my holiday anymore’

Mak added his luggage contained USD1,400 (approx. RM6,200), RMB500 (approx. RM306), his passport, power bank, chargers, clothes, his Chinese national ID, house keys, and bank cards.

Thankfully, he had some Ringgit enough for him to travel to Kuala Lumpur to replace his stolen travel documents so that he wouldn’t be completely stranded in Malaysia.

Needless to say, the theft had effectively destroyed Mak’s hopes of having an enjoyable trip.

“I was drawn to Malaysia after hearing that traditional Chinese culture is well-preserved there, along with the country’s beautiful scenery and delicious food. I had also planned to visit Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, and Penang.

I don’t have any mood for sightseeing anymore. I just hope the police can catch the thief soon so I can recover as much of my stolen belongings as possible,” he said.

When contacted, Johor Bahru South district police chief Raub Selamat confirmed a report was lodged over the theft. However, the suspect still remains at large.
