Now that Chinese New Year has come and passed, many are now hitting the gym or working out at home to shed the extra pounds gained during the festive season.
A man in Henan, China, nearly lost his life after he did push-ups and rope skipping as part of his New Year’s resolution, where a collapsed lung was later revealed to be the cause for his near demise.
China man’s lung collapses after doing 20 push-ups & rope skipping
According to a video uploaded to the platform Douyin, it wrote that the man did a total of 20-push ups consecutively before following it up with rope skipping.

The next morning, he woke up to what felt like muscle strain in his chest. As the hours went by, his condition worsened with him struggling to breathe, especially when he was climbing the stairs.
Soon, a sharp pain began to flood his chest area, so much so that the man felt as though his ribs were being ripped apart, leading him to seek treatment at the hospital.
He was later diagnosed with spontaneous pneumothorax, a condition where air leaks into the space that exists between the lung and chest wall, which then causes the lung to collapse.

According to medical scans, the man’s right lung had a small hole, leading it to shrink to one-third of its normal size.
Doctors also noted that while the hole was small at first, they warned that it could become bigger and cause the man’s heart and lungs to be compressed due to increased pressure in his chest, which has fatal consequences.
Thankfully, he sought medical help in the nick of time before further damage was inflicted.

Exercise must be done moderately
According to a research paper published on the National Library of Medicine, researchers found that lungs can suffer extensive injuries if one exercises too strenuously.
This is because one’s breathing becomes heavy and deep during intense exercising, thus increasing pressure and blood volume in the lungs. However, the lung’s capillaries are at risk of rupturing in the process too.
As such, extreme or sudden high-intensity workouts are high discouraged, especially for those who aren’t used to such intensive exercise.
