What was supposed to be a normal dental checkup nearly turned fatal for a man in Shanghai, China, where nine of his teeth were removed in one sitting.
As a result, he lost consciousness and was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he was treated for several life-threatening conditions triggered by the extraction.

According to a report by Sin Chew Daily, the 80-year-old man surnamed Chen (transliteration) had a clean bill of health, except for occasional instances of toothaches that affected his eating.
One day, he came across an advertisement on his phone from a hospital named Yingbo Dental which claimed to provide patients with “implants in the morning”, which would then enable them to “eat by the evening”.
With his curiosity piqued by the advertisement, Chen paid the hospital a visit, where he planned to only inquire about the procedure. However, the doctor told him that all of his teeth were in bad condition and needed to be removed after conducting an X-ray test on him.
The doctor also suggested that extracting the teeth immediately would save him an extra trip to the hospital. Chen eventually relented and signed several multiple consent forms before he was wheeled into surgery for tooth extraction.
During the procedure, which saw nine of this teeth being removed from his upper jaw, Chen suddenly lost consciousness and was rushed to the emergency room of another hospital, where he stayed for a week.
Suffered severe health conditions
Based on the hospital’s health record, Chen underwent local anesthesia for the tooth extraction but later experienced throat discomfort after his mouth began to bleed.
It then escalated to breathing difficulties, urinary incontinence, and weakened respiration, where an emergency tracheal intubation had to be performed to remove a large amount of bloody fluids from his body.
Chen was later diagnosed with pneumonia caused by blood aspiration, acute respiratory failure, alveolar bleeding, acute renal insufficiency, coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, and atrial fibrillation.
Needless to say, Chen’s family were outraged, with his son calling the procedure “extremely risky” as it nearly cost his father’s life.
A dentist also commented on the matter, saying no more than two teeth are usually extracted from one side at a time, adding that “extracting nine teeth from the upper jaw in a single procedure is indeed quite rare.”
Hospital defends extraction procedure
The doctor from Yingbo Dental defended the procedure however, saying Chen had undergone blood tests beforehand, where it showed his blood sugar and blood pressure levels were deemed suitable for the extraction.
The doctor also reiterated that Chen had signed an informed consent form and insisted that removing nine teeth at once “wasn’t a problem.”
