As Malaysians, we’ve always proudly claimed the food crown — but it turns out we’re not the only ones obsessed with our local flavours.
A recent TikTok video posted by @secretflavorshanghai has gone viral for showing a Chinese couple choosing Malaysian dishes as the main highlight for their wedding reception.
Specially requested by bride and groom
The video, uploaded by the owner of a Malaysian catering service based in Shanghai, captured the preparation of local favourites specially requested by the bride and groom.
Even Chinese weddings want Malaysian food. Alhamdulillah, I catered for a wedding today — a couple from Shanghai wanted food from my kitchen, Secret Flavour, which serves Malaysian cuisine,” the video caption read.
On the menu? A full spread featuring nasi lemak with assorted vegetables and side dishes, crispy curry puffs, traditional keropok, and iconic drinks like sirap bandung and teh tarik.

The banquet table was beautifully set with rose petals, adding a romantic and festive touch to the celebration.
Netizens’ reaction
The video has since garnered praise from Malaysians online, who were thrilled to see their homegrown delicacies served at such a significant occasion overseas.
Many took to the comments to express their pride, saying it reflects how Malaysian culture and flavours are gaining recognition internationally.
‘Awesome, boss. They like our food too. This is one way of promoting our country.‘

‘Amazing to see the spirit of a Malaysian being recognized globally. Recently, the film ‘Thunderbolt’ was shot in KL and brought international attention.’

Addressing curious netizens who wondered whether the guests could handle the spicy flavours, the caterer assured them that the Chinese guests not only finished their meals but had no issues with the spiciness — proving that Malaysian heat can win hearts too.
The man behind the viral video is reportedly a Malaysian chef who runs a restaurant in Shanghai.
