Budget 2025: Sugar Tax To Increase By RM0.40 Per Litre As Part Of ‘War On Sugar’

Not so sweet anymore.
The government has announced a new measure under Budget 2025, increasing the excise duty on sugary drinks by 40 sen per liter, effective January 1, 2025.

This move aims to curb sugar consumption in the country and generate additional revenue to support public health initiatives.

Allocation of additional funds from sugar tax

The excise duty collected from sugary drinks will directly fund two crucial healthcare programs:

  1. SGLT-2 Inhibitors for Diabetes Treatment
    • The additional revenue will provide a greater supply of SGLT-2 inhibitors, a medication crucial for managing blood glucose levels among diabetes patients. This step aligns with efforts to make essential treatments more accessible to the public.
  2. Peritoneal Dialysis for Kidney Patients
    • Another portion of the funds will be allocated to support peritoneal dialysis treatment for end-stage kidney disease patients, offering more comprehensive care options for those in need.

Addressing rising health concerns

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to tackling non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, which have become a growing concern in the country. With the increased excise duty, the government hopes to discourage excessive consumption of sugary drinks while providing better healthcare services to affected individuals.

The “War on Sugar” campaign serves as a dual strategy to promote healthier lifestyles and fund life-saving treatments for the population.
