Budget 2025: Gov’t Allocates RM150mil For Drain Cleaning & River Dredging To Combat Flash

Putting a stop to flash floods.
The government has allocated RM150 million to local authorities (PBT) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) to combat the increasing threat of flash floods.

This allocation is aimed at ensuring proactive measures to mitigate flood risks through two key activities:

  1. Drain Cleaning
    • Local councils will carry out routine cleaning of clogged drains to prevent water buildup during heavy rainfall.
    • Maintenance will focus on urban and suburban areas with a history of flash flooding, especially during monsoon seasons.
    • Clearing blockages caused by debris, leaves, or uncollected waste will ensure smoother water flow, reducing the likelihood of flash floods.
  2. River Dredging
    • JPS will oversee the dredging of rivers and waterways to remove accumulated silt, sand, and waste that hinder water flow.
    • This initiative will help deepen river channels, increasing their capacity to accommodate heavy rain runoff without overflowing.
    • Priority will be given to rivers in high-risk zones identified based on past flooding incidents.
