Boy In China Forced To Do 1000 Squats, Now Possibly Disabled For Life

Ouch.
A young boy in China is now facing the horrific prospect of being crippled for life after he was forced to perform 1,000 squats by a teacher at a summer camp.

Furthermore, he was allegedly kicked by one of the instructors when he failed to perform over 200 squats.

Boy in China forced to do 1000 squats as punishment

According to local news outlet 腾讯网, it reported that the boy’s mother sent him to a summer camp for a week, where it involved physical training as part of the itinerary.

On the last day of the camp (Aug 26, 2023), the boy, who was 13 at the time, was caught talking to other participants.

As a form of punishment, he was made to do 1,000 squats there and then. When the boy reached the 200th squat, he felt his legs buckling underneath him, prompting an instructor to walk towards him and land a kick, causing him to fall.

Following the fall, the boy remained on the ground for 30 minutes until his parents came for him.

Faces lifetime disability

The boy was eventually admitted to the hospital and was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a condition where muscles break down. Aside from that, his liver and kidneys were also damaged.

On top of that, doctors informed the boy’s parents that their child will never be able to take part in sports again.

After being discharged from the hospital, the boy could only stay at home and was forced to turn to crutches and a wheelchair to move around, which inevitably affected his studies as well.

Back and forth negotiations

The boy’s parents then turned their attention to the camp’s organisers, where they sought compensation for their son’s injuries.

Following lengthy negotiations, an agreement was drawn up, stating that their child’s medical treatment, tutoring fees, transportation costs, and compensation for missed work will be borne by the organisers.

However, the agreement erroneously wrote that the boy’s injury was caused by putting in too much effort while doing the squats.

As for the camp organiser, they only agreed to a one-time payment of ¥18,000 (approx. RM10,800) but refused to take responsibility for future complications.

This was the opposite of what the organiser told the boy’s mother previously, who said that they would cover the medical expenses even after paying the settlement money.

Lawsuit filed

Left with no other recourse, the boy’s parents sued the camp organisers in June 2024.

In the lawsuit, they claimed that the settlement agreement had grossly misrepresented the cause of their son’s injuries and said the organisers should bear any related costs.

They also argued that their son’s injury was akin to a disability and believed the damages incurred was beyond what was covered in the settlement.
