Travelling overseas soon?
Besides checking your passport, flights and hotel bookings, Malaysians are also encouraged to register their whereabouts when travelling abroad.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, registering allows the nearest Malaysian mission to contact and assist Malaysians, especially during emergencies.
First option: Register through e-Konsular
Malaysians can register their presence overseas through e-Konsular, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ online consular platform.

Having your details registered can make it easier for Malaysian diplomatic missions to know where you are and contact you if an emergency occurs.
But what if you can’t access e-Konsular?
There is another option.
Depending on where you are travelling, you may be able to contact the Malaysian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate directly and provide your travel details.
Some Malaysian missions specifically allow short-term travellers to register by email.
For example, the Consulate General of Malaysia in Dubai states that Malaysians on short visits may register their presence through email.
However, this does not mean every Malaysian mission follows exactly the same procedure.
So what should you do?
If you cannot access e-Konsular before your trip:
- Find the Malaysian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate responsible for your destination.
- Visit its official website.
- Look for its “Registration of Malaysians”, consular or travel information section.
- Check whether it accepts registration by email.
- If it does, send your travel and contact details before travelling or according to the mission’s instructions.

What details should you prepare?
Requirements may differ between missions, but it is useful to have the following ready:
- Full name
- Passport number
- Contact number
- Emergency contact details
- Address or accommodation overseas
- Date of arrival
- Expected date of departure
These are among the details requested by some Malaysian missions for short-term visitors.
Can you email them before flying?
In some cases, yes.
If you already know your travel dates and where you will be staying, you can check the Malaysian mission responsible for your destination before leaving Malaysia.
If that mission accepts registration by email, you can follow its instructions and submit your details accordingly.
The important thing is not to assume that the email registration method applies everywhere, as requirements may vary from one mission to another.
What about MyWorldAlert?
Malaysians should also know about MyWorldAlert, which is linked with the e-Konsular account system.
Wisma Putra announced that user accounts for e-Konsular and MyWorldAlert have been consolidated.
Existing users can use their e-Konsular password to access both platforms, while new users only need to register through either e-Konsular or MyWorldAlert.
Keep copies of your travel documents
Besides registering your whereabouts, it is also useful to keep copies of important travel documents such as your passport, flight itinerary, accommodation details and travel insurance.
You can save digital copies on your phone or cloud storage, and keep a separate physical copy where possible.
If your passport or belongings are lost while overseas, having these details ready can make it easier when seeking help from the nearest Malaysian mission.
Why does registering matter?
Hopefully, you will never need consular assistance during your holiday.
But emergencies such as natural disasters, political unrest or major disruptions can happen unexpectedly.
Providing Malaysian authorities with your whereabouts and contact information can make it easier for the relevant Malaysian mission to reach you when assistance is needed.
So if you cannot access e-Konsular before travelling, remember this:
Find the Malaysian mission responsible for your destination, check its official registration instructions, and contact it directly if necessary.
It is a small step, but one worth considering before heading overseas.
