A foreign national was recently nabbed for offering illegal taxi services and coercing a group of tourists at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) yesterday (Dec 11).
Details and photos of the incident was later shared by the Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) on its official Facebook page.
Charged tourists RM250
According to the post’s caption, the Bangladeshi man had allegedly persuaded, coaxed, and offered transportation services to seven Bruneian passengers from KLIA Terminal 1 to their hotel near Suria KLCC.
He also told the group that they would be charged a total of RM250 for the ride, which is to be paid upon arriving at their destination.
However, the ride never took off as the Bangladeshi man was caught by JPJ officers for offering illegal taxi services.
Selangor Road Transport Department (RTD) director Azrin Borhan said the Bangladeshi man told officers that he had been working as an illegal taxi operator for the past year using his father’s vehicle.
He was also found to be a repeat offender as he was previously arrested twice for the same offence, reported NST.
Another driver caught on same day
Meanwhile, another illegal taxi driver, also a Bangladeshi national, was nabbed for offering unlawful taxi services to two tourists for RM140.
“The suspect had been detained three times previously and also admitted to offering illegal taxi services for several years using a rented private vehicle.
“A Proton Waja vehicle was also seized in the arrest,” said Borhan.
Under Section 205(1) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (APAD 2010), those who act as illegal taxi drivers face a fine not exceeding RM50,000, a jail term not exceeding five years, or both.
As for those found guilty of abetting such drivers, they may also be charged under Section 243(1) of the same Act.
Borhan reminded the public to engage use legitimate services via counters at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2 or by booking via e-hailing applications.
