The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) will hold an inquest into the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to The Star, the AGC said in a statement that the decision was made after reviewing the police investigation report submitted on Tuesday (Aug 12).
‘The process will be handled transparently’
The inquest will be conducted under Section 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code to establish the cause of death and whether any criminal elements were involved.
The process will be handled by the Coroner’s Court independently and transparently in accordance with the law.”
It was earlier reported that pathologists conducting a post-mortem on Zara at Queen Elizabeth Hospital last Sunday detected as many as 20 to 30 possible injuries. The autopsy lasted eight hours and examined both external and internal injuries.

Zara Qairina was pronounced dead on July 17 at a hospital in Sabah, a day after falling from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar.
Her death sparked widespread speculation on social media, with some claiming she may have been a victim of bullying. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
