Currently, Form 5 Malaysian students are in the midst of sitting for their SPM 2024 exam, which began on Dec 2, 2024, and is expected to end on Feb 6, 2025.
However, there have been a large number of candidates who failed to make an appearance for the exam, as revealed by the Ministry of Education (MOE) minister Fadhlina Sidek.
Around 10,000 students didn’t sit for SPM 2024
Speaking to reporters during a press conference on the operation of SPM 2024 in Putrajaya on Thursday (Jan 2), Fadhlina said approximately 10,000 candidates failed to turn up for the exam.
This figure is somewhat similar to what happened last year, where a total of 10,160 candidates didn’t take SPM 2023.

However, she added that MOE is still in the midst of updating the numbers.
The attendance rate among those who sat for the exam has already reached 97%, which is a good result. We are still in the process of updating as there are still those who have not been identified and yet to have confirmed their attendance.
“We hope to increase this attendance to ensure that our students are present for the SPM examination,” she said.
Fadhlina added that there were special needs candidates taking SPM in every state, including two candidates aged 63 in Negeri Sembilan.

Meanwhile, Fadhlina said MOE is prepared to activate ‘Op Payung’ in the event of floods to assist affected candidates and examination personnel, adding that things are “under control” for now.
The states identified to be at risk of flooding were Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Pahang, Johor, and Sabah.
