China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an advisory telling Chinese citizens to avoid travelling to Japan “for the time being”, citing a “continuously deteriorating safety environment”.
But while the notice sparked discussion among Chinese netizens, it was the reaction from Japan that immediately took over social media, where many users openly expressed unexpected excitement.
‘Don’t come!’
On Japanese social media, the announcement quickly became a trending topic, with many users responding in unexpectedly blunt and sarcastic ways.
Some wrote comments like “Great, don’t come,” while others said things along the lines of “Then just ban travel completely.”
The most viral response, however, was a simple one-word reaction: “Arigato.”
The dismissive tone sparked debate among Chinese netizens, many of whom questioned why Japan seemed relieved rather than concerned.

Why China issued the warning
China explained that the advisory was triggered by a rise in social instability and a series of crimes involving Chinese nationals in Japan throughout the year, including several assault and robbery cases that remain unsolved.
The ministry also highlighted recent provocative remarks made by Japanese public figures, saying such rhetoric has worsened the atmosphere for China–Japan interactions and created significant safety risks for Chinese citizens.
Chinese authorities added that the embassy and consulates in Japan have been closely monitoring the situation and are urging citizens to remain cautious.
Travellers are being advised to avoid visiting Japan for now, stay alert to their surroundings, and prioritise personal safety.
The ministry also reminded the public to report emergencies immediately and seek assistance from local police or Chinese diplomatic missions if needed.
