In a decisive move to uphold parliamentary decorum, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, has granted the Dewan Rakyat Speaker the authority to crack down on unruly behaviour by members of Parliament.
This announcement came during His Majesty’s address at the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament.

Expressing deep concern over the deteriorating conduct witnessed within the hallowed halls of the Dewan Rakyat, His Majesty urged MPs to exemplify dignity, respect regulations, maintain politeness, and refrain from derogatory remarks towards their peers.
“Looking at the behaviour of MPs during the past sitting, I would be ashamed to even enter the Dewan Rakyat, lamented His Majesty.
In a bid to restore order, Sultan Ibrahim conferred the Speaker with the power to impose a 14-day ban on any parliamentarian found breaching decorum persistently, reported NST.

“Therefore, I hope MPs set a good example when they are in this honourable Dewan Rakyat by maintaining decorum, adhering to the regulations, being polite and refrain from insulting others,” His Majesty emphasised.
This action shows a strong stand against disruptive behaviour and highlights how crucial it is to create a positive environment for productive discussions and decision-making in Malaysia’s Parliament.
This new rule is a warning to MPs: behave well or face punishment. With the Speaker now able to enforce rules, everyone hopes for a more polite and effective Parliament.
