National archer Haziq Kamaruddin’s has passed away at the tender age of 27, shocking many within the Malaysian sports community .
According to Malaysianow, one of his family members said the national athlete had collapsed after performing the subuh prayers at his home in Kajang.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong offered his condolences to Haziq’s family and encouraged them to stay strong during this difficult time.
“I hope that his family will be resilient in facing trials and sorrows during this holy month of Syawal.”
Haziq served as Malaysia’s representative in archery for ten years and has competed in the London Olympics in 2012 and Rio Olympics in 2016.
He was also part of the team that brought home Malaysia’s first-ever archery medal at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games after the men’s recurve team won second place.
During Haziq’s participation in the SEA Games from 2011 to 2019, he bagged four gold and two silver medals in the individual and team competitions.
The archer, who hails from Johor, was also crowned the 2012 Bukit Jalil Sports School Sportsman alongside diving champion Pandelela Rinong.
