A nine-year-old student died after falling into a 1.8-metre-deep sewage drain inside his school compound in Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan on Thursday morning (Sep 25).
Accident happened during sports day
According to Sin Chew Daily, the school was holding its athletics meet around 9 am when the boy accidentally stepped onto a fibre-made drain cover and fell into the uncovered sewage drain.

It is understood that the victim was the son of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) chairman.
Lenggeng assemblyman Datuk Mohd Asna Amin said a female student first alerted others that someone had fallen into the drain.
At first, rescuers only saw a floating school cap and shoes. A resident then dived in and pulled the student out after he was trapped inside for about 10 minutes.

We tried to resuscitate him for nearly 30 minutes, including CPR, while waiting for the ambulance. Sadly, the hospital later confirmed his passing,” he said.
Police rule case as accident
Mohamad Asna noted that the school’s new building was only opened last year and should have obtained full safety certification.
He said he will await a full report before deciding on further action.
Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad confirmed the incident, saying the victim was rushed to Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital in Seremban but was pronounced dead during treatment.
The body has been sent to the mortuary at Rembau Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.
Police said initial findings show it was an accident with no criminal elements involved.
Alzafny also urged the public not to speculate on the case and asked anyone with information to contact the nearest police station or the Nilai police operations room at 06-790 2222.
