A 47-year-old man weighing over 200kg was rushed to hospital after suddenly experiencing breathing difficulties at Bandar Laguna Merbok on Saturday.
According to a post on Facebook, due to the patient’s size, the ambulance team that first arrived at the scene was unable to transport him safely, as standard ambulance equipment and space were insufficient.
Deployed Community MPV
The situation prompted a joint effort involving several emergency and volunteer teams.
The Team Bantuan Sungai Petani (TBSP) deployed its Community MPV to assist, working together with the Yayasan Tengku Kassim Ambulance Team and the Sungai Petani Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Seven to eight rescuers were involved in manually lifting the patient, as he could not be placed on a conventional stretcher.

He was then transported using the TBSP Community MPV and rushed to the Red Zone emergency unit at Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim.
Chairman of the Sungai Petani Volunteer Fire Brigade, Leong Ming Tat, said his team received the distress call at about 3.45pm and immediately mobilised to assist.
The patient’s size meant a normal stretcher could not be used. To avoid any risk during the transfer, we decided on manual lifting. Having more people ensured both strength and the patient’s safety,” he said.
Motorist gave way during emergency transfer
TBSP shared details of the rescue on social media, thanking all assisting teams as well as motorists who gave way to the MPV during the emergency transfer.
The community aid group also reminded the public that Team Bantuan Sungai Petani TBSP provides patient transport services to and from hospitals, as well as free hearse services. Those seeking assistance may contact the team at 017-533 5600.
