A 77-year-old man was seriously injured after his car rammed into two pre-war shop lots in Penang, causing the building façade to collapse and crush his vehicle.
The incident happened around 1.50pm today (July 16) at the junction of Jalan Bunga Raya in Butterworth.
According to reports, the elderly driver lost control of his car before it slammed into a barber shop and an optical store.
The impact caused a large section of the shop’s front wall to collapse, leaving a pile of bricks and rubble on the street and on top of the car.
The man’s legs were pinned under the debris, and he was later rushed to Seberang Jaya Hospital for emergency treatment.
Photos and videos from the scene show the car almost completely buried under bricks, with bystanders gathering around as rescue teams worked to free the victim.
Firefighters arrived shortly after receiving the distress call, while police were deployed to manage traffic and secure the busy road.
The crash caused major traffic disruption in the area and left shop owners shocked at the sudden destruction.
Video of the crash shared on social media shows the terrifying moment the car ploughed into the shopfront without slowing down, before the roof and walls collapsed like a stack of cards.
