A group of seven village dogs in northeastern China has touched hearts across the internet after escaping alleged thieves and walking more than 17km together to find their way home.
Their journey, marked by loyalty and quiet determination, has since gone viral, with many calling it a story that feels straight out of a movie.
Refused to leave one another behind

On March 16, a netizen surnamed Lu spotted the dogs walking along a busy highway in Changchun, Jilin province.
What stood out was not just where they were, but how they moved.
Reported by SCMP, the seven dogs stayed close together, almost as if they had made a silent promise not to abandon one another.
An injured German shepherd was carefully surrounded by the rest, while a Corgi at the front repeatedly turned back, as though checking that every member of the group was still there.
Among them were Golden Retrievers, Labradors and Pekinese, all moving in unison.
Lu said they did not look like strays at all, but more like a group of companions trying to make it home.
Although he tried to guide them to safety, the dogs chose to continue on their path.
Suspected to have escaped from dog meat traders
A local stray dog rescue group later shared that the dogs all came from the same village and had grown up roaming together, forming strong bonds over time.
Volunteers were quickly mobilised to track them, even deploying a drone to follow their movements from above.
One volunteer claimed the dogs had been stolen by individuals linked to a dog meat shop and likely escaped while being transported.
While no one saw the exact moment they broke free, what followed was something few expected.
Instead of scattering in fear, the dogs stayed together and began what would become a 17km journey home.
A journey that ended where they belonged

Three days later, on March 19, volunteers confirmed that all seven dogs had safely returned to their owners, who came from three different households.
For their families, the reunion was nothing short of a miracle.
One owner, whose German shepherd and Golden Retriever were among the group, said they felt incredibly lucky their dogs made it back alive.
Another owner shared that her Corgi had always been clever, but never imagined it would one day help lead a group home.
A story that moved millions
Videos of the dogs have since racked up over 230 million views, with many netizens deeply moved by what they saw.
Some described how the dogs appeared to look out for one another throughout the journey, with one staying closer to traffic as if shielding the rest, while another constantly checked behind.
Others said the dogs showed a level of loyalty and compassion that people often struggle to live up to.
The story has also reignited conversations about the dog meat trade in parts of China, where cases of stolen pets continue to be reported despite dog theft being a criminal offence.
While there is no nationwide ban on consuming dog meat, some cities like Shenzhen have introduced restrictions.
“They chose to go home together”
Among the many comments online, one sentiment stood out.
That these dogs did not just escape, they chose to go home together.
In a world where survival often means looking out for oneself, the seven dogs reminded many of something simple yet powerful.
Sometimes, the strongest bonds are the ones that refuse to break, even in the face of fear.
