65yo Penang Durian Farmer Who Made ‘Black Thorn’ Durian Famous Given Datuk Title

Malaysia honours its durian hero.
At 65, a durian farmer from Penang has received one of the state’s highest honours after decades of dedication to a single fruit.

Leow Cheok Kiang was recently awarded the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN), which carries the title Datuk, in recognition of his efforts in promoting the premium durian variety Black Thorn, also known as Or Chee.

The award was presented during the 84th birthday celebration of Penang’s Governor, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, at Dewan Sri Pinang.

Started at just eight years old

Leow began working in the durian business at the age of eight under the guidance of his father. What started as a small family trade gradually grew into a large operation involving multiple orchards.

According to Berita Harian, he cultivates and sells over ten durian varieties, including Musang King, Red Prawn and D14.

Still, Black Thorn remains his signature fruit and best-selling item, known for its rich sweetness and smooth texture.

A durian that markets itself

Despite doing little advertising, Leow’s Black Thorn durians are highly sought after by customers from all over the world.

Many of his returning customers heard about his produce through word of mouth.

He also revealed that the Black Thorn variety has been officially patented and registered with an identification number.

Leow is considering business expansion, including setting up new outlets in Penang.

However, he admitted that durian cultivation is now more difficult than it used to be. Farmers today face challenges such as climate change, pest threats and rising operational costs.

Expanding the business, he said, requires careful planning, experienced workers and suitable land.

Recognition without the spotlight

Although the Datuk title is a significant milestone, Leow remains humble. He does not intend to use the title as a promotional tool and prefers to let his durians speak for themselves.

He thanked the Penang government for the recognition and expressed gratitude to his loyal customers who have supported him throughout his journey.

After decades in the industry, Leow says he is simply grateful to continue doing what he love, growing durians that people enjoy.
