While hiking is largely seen as an activity that’s relatively safe for all to take part in, there have been instances where hikers have suddenly collapsed halfway before passing away.
This was unfortunately what happened to a local man while he was on a hiking excursion up Mount Kinabalu in Sabah yesterday (Feb 9).

According to a report by NST, the victim was a 65-year-old Malaysian man who was climbing Mount Kinabalu halfway when he lost consciousness at Kilometer 5.5.

Ranau Fire and Rescue Station Chief Assistant Fire Superintendent Ridwan Mohd Taib said a team of six men, which included members of the Mountain Search and Rescue Team (MoSAR), mountain guides, and ParkSAR members, was deployed to the scene upon receiving an emergency call at 3.11pm.
“The victim was then brought down to Timpohon Gate using a Robinson stretcher. After reaching there, an officer from the Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed the victim had passed away,” he said when contacted by the English daily.

The body was later handed over to police for further action before the rescue operation came to a close at 8.03pm.
Our condolences to the victim’s family and we hope authorities will be able to determine the cause of death soon.
