Looks like not everyone’s hyped about AI.
A recent Ipsos Malaysia survey revealed that a whopping 63% of Malaysians are worried artificial intelligence (AI) could cost them their jobs.
That’s nearly double the global average of 36%.
The study, which involved over 23,216 participants from 30 countries (including 500 Malaysians), aimed to find out how people really feel about the rise of AI tech like ChatGPT, automation tools, and smart machines.
M’sians are anxious
Interestingly, despite their fears, 77% of Malaysians are also excited about the future of AI and believe it could improve their lives.
It’s a love-hate relationship: they see the benefits, but also worry about being replaced by a robot.
Here’s what else they found:
- Only 55% of Malaysians trust AI to make unbiased decisions, like in hiring or criminal cases.
- 59% say AI will change the way they work — either by helping them or taking over completely.
- Globally, support for stronger regulation of AI is high, with many calling for governments to step in.
Malaysians are cautiously optimistic.
They’re intrigued by AI’s potential, but they’re also keeping an eye out for their paychecks — just in case the robots really are coming for their jobs.
